Convent of Jesus Altarpiece
Jorge Afonso·1517
Historical Context
Jorge Afonso created this Convent of Jesus Altarpiece around 1517 for the Convent of Jesus in Setúbal, one of the most important early Manueline architectural monuments in Portugal. The convent, founded in 1490 under the patronage of Queen Leonor, was a center of Clarissan spirituality and royal devotion. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The large-scale altarpiece demonstrates Afonso's ability to organize complex multi-panel programs, with consistent quality across scenes that reveal his workshop's efficient production methods.
