Madonna and Child
Jaume Serra·1359
Historical Context
Jaume Serra, a leading painter of the Catalan Gothic school, created this Madonna and Child for the devotional culture of fourteenth-century Aragon. The Serra brothers — Jaume and Pere — dominated Barcelona's painting workshops in the late 1300s, producing altarpieces that blended Italianate influences with the distinctive Catalan taste for vivid color and ornamental richness. Now in the Museo del Prado, this panel represents the important yet often overlooked tradition of Gothic painting on the Iberian Peninsula.
Technical Analysis
The tempera on panel work features the bold, saturated palette characteristic of Catalan Gothic painting, with generous use of gold leaf in the background and haloes. The figures display a blend of Sienese-influenced soft modeling with the more angular, linear style native to the Catalan school.
