Entry to the Paradise and vision of the Crucified by Bartolomé Bermejo

Entry to the Paradise and vision of the Crucified

Bartolomé Bermejo·1480

Historical Context

Bartolomé Bermejo, the greatest Spanish painter of the fifteenth century, created this scene of the Entry to Paradise and Vision of the Crucified around 1480. Bermejo's extraordinary command of the oil medium, surpassing most Netherlandish painters in luminosity and atmospheric depth, made his works among the most technically accomplished in all of European painting. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with Bermejo's extraordinary mastery of atmospheric effects and luminous coloring. The visionary subject is rendered with the technical brilliance that places Bermejo among the supreme painters of the fifteenth century.
