Laatste Avondmaal
Master of 1518·1519
Historical Context
The Master of 1518, an anonymous Antwerp painter named after a dated triptych, created this Last Supper around 1519. This artist represents the distinctive Antwerp Mannerist style with its characteristic elongated figures, complex spatial arrangements, and rich decorative detail that flourished in Antwerp's booming art market. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows the Antwerp Mannerist style with elaborate architectural settings, ornamental costumes, and the crowded, dynamic composition typical of this commercially successful Antwerp workshop tradition.
