Autorretrato 1902
Eliseu Visconti·1902
Historical Context
Visconti painted multiple self-portraits in 1902, examining himself with the analytical attention he brought to any figure subject. The existence of several self-portraits from this single year suggests a sustained period of self-examination, perhaps stimulated by the transition between his Paris years and his return to Rio de Janeiro. A second 1902 self-portrait — distinct from the first (wiki-Q18711145) — allowed him to approach himself from a different angle or in a different psychological state. Self-portraiture across multiple sittings is a tradition going back to Rembrandt, and Visconti's repeated self-examinations place him within this introspective lineage.
Technical Analysis
Each self-portrait necessarily captures different conditions — different lighting, different costume, different emotional bearing — and this example may show Visconti in a more informal or exploratory mode. His brushwork may be looser, the tonal relationships less resolved, consistent with a study rather than a presentation portrait.
