A Virgem do Leite - Frei Carlos

Frei Carlos, a Flemish-born painter who entered the Espinheiro Monastery in Évora as a Hieronymite monk, created this Virgin of the Milk around 1518. As one of the few identified monastic painters in Portugal, Frei Carlos brought his Netherlandish technical training directly into Portuguese religious life, producing devotional works of intimate spiritual beauty. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
