La Cueillette (The Harvest), painted around 1876, belongs to the group of figure subjects Cézanne produced in his early mature period as he developed the formal strategies that would culminate in his great Bathers series. Figures engaged in agricultural labour — harvesting, picking — had been subjects of Barbizon and Realist painting before Cézanne, but his treatment removes all social narrative or sentimental observation, using the labouring body as a formal element within a compositional structure of his own devising. The work anticipates the monumental synthesis of figure and landscape that his late Bathers paintings would achieve.
Technical Analysis
