Virgin Annunciate
Giovanni del Biondo·1356
Historical Context
This Virgin Annunciate by Giovanni del Biondo, a Florentine painter active from the 1350s through the 1390s, formed part of an Annunciation composition typically paired with a corresponding Angel Annunciate panel. Giovanni was one of the most prolific altarpiece painters in late Trecento Florence, working for major churches including Santa Croce and the Duomo. His style preserved the monumental clarity of the Giottesque tradition while embracing the decorative richness of International Gothic influences.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on a gold-ground panel, the Virgin is depicted in a pose of reverent surprise with refined facial modeling and carefully rendered drapery. The tooled gold background and ornamental halo punchwork demonstrate the high level of technical craftsmanship in Giovanni del Biondo's workshop.
