The Holy Family
Historical Context
The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece, Cologne's leading painter around 1475-1510, created this Holy Family around 1497. The master's style is instantly recognizable for its exuberant decorative richness, with elaborate drapery, jeweled surfaces, and brilliant coloring. His Holy Family compositions bring a celebratory opulence to intimate devotional subjects. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty. The period's defining aesthetic — balanced composition, idealized figures, unified atmospheric space — was developed above all in Florence and Rome before spreading across Italy and Europe.
Technical Analysis
