The Holy Trinity with the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist
Historical Context
The Master of the Wendelin Altar painted this Holy Trinity with the Virgin and Saint John around 1503. The Gnadenstuhl (Throne of Grace) format showing the Father holding the crucified Son was the standard Trinity representation. This Franconian master produced competent devotional paintings for regional churches. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Franconian school's clear coloring and formal theological composition. The Trinity arrangement follows established conventions with careful rendering of the divine figures.
