Madonna and Child
Historical Context
Giovanni Francesco Caroto, a Veronese painter who studied under Andrea Mantegna and later worked with Raphael in Rome, painted this Madonna and Child around 1515. Caroto was the leading painter of Verona for much of the early sixteenth century, bringing Mantegnesque precision and Raphaelesque grace to Veronese devotional painting. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Caroto's distinctive blend of Mantegna's sharp drawing with the softer modeling and warmer palette he absorbed from his exposure to Raphael and central Italian painting.
