Martyrdom of the Apostles: Martyrdom of Saint Andrew

Stefan Lochner painted this Martyrdom of Saint Andrew as part of his apostle cycle. Andrew's crucifixion on an X-shaped cross became one of the most recognizable images in Christian iconography. Lochner's rendering of the distinctive cross and the suffering apostle follows established hagiographic tradition.
