Stefan Lochner painted this Martyrdom of Saint Thomas as part of his apostle martyrdom cycle. Thomas's missionary journey to India and martyrdom there was one of the most exotic stories in the apostolic tradition. Lochner's treatment would have incorporated the Eastern setting within his refined Cologne aesthetic. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
