Frankfurt Dominican Altarpiece: Tree of Jesse (lower part)

Hans Holbein the Elder painted this lower part of the Tree of Jesse for the Frankfurt Dominican Altarpiece around 1501. The genealogical tree format, tracing Christ's ancestry from Jesse through the kings of Israel, was both decoratively complex and theologically significant. This lower section shows the roots and earliest generations of the lineage. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
