Frankfurt Dominican Altarpiece: Bearing of the Cross
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder painted the Bearing of the Cross for the Frankfurt Dominican Altarpiece around 1501. The via crucis, showing Christ struggling under the weight of the cross on the road to Calvary, was one of the most emotionally demanding scenes in the Passion cycle. Holbein's processional composition moves with dramatic force. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with dynamic procession composition and varied figure characterization. Holbein's treatment of the crowd's mixed reactions of compassion and hostility creates a complex emotional landscape.
