St Barbara
Historical Context
The Master of the Morrison Triptych painted this Saint Barbara around 1505. Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints in Northern European devotion, invoked as protection against sudden death. The Master's refined technique places him among the accomplished painters of the Cologne-Lower Rhine region. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful rendering of the saint's attributes including her tower. The refined technique and warm coloring place this panel within the quality standards of the Lower Rhenish school.
