Sainte Famille
Andrea Solari·1510
Historical Context
Andrea Solari, a leading Milanese painter and follower of Leonardo da Vinci, created this Holy Family around 1510. Solari spent several years working in France for Cardinal Georges d'Amboise at the Château de Gaillon, making him one of the key conduits for Leonardesque style into French artistic culture. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Solari's refined Leonardesque technique with smooth sfumato modeling, warm glazes, and the compositional balance characteristic of the Milanese school.
