Conversion of Paul
Historical Context
The Conversion of Saint Paul, painted by Bruegel in 1567, transposes the biblical account of Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus into a mountainous Alpine landscape with a military column winding through a narrow pass. The tiny figure of the fallen Saul is nearly lost among the soldiers and horses. The military procession through mountains may reflect contemporary events, as Spanish troops were marching through Alpine passes to reach the Netherlands.
Technical Analysis
Bruegel's sweeping mountain landscape dominates the composition, with the military column creating a serpentine movement through the rocky terrain. The atmospheric perspective and cool blue-gray palette capture the grandeur of the Alpine setting.
