Holy Family with young Saint John
Il Sodoma·1525
Historical Context
Il Sodoma painted this Holy Family with the young Saint John around 1525. As the leading painter of Siena, Sodoma produced numerous devotional paintings combining Leonardesque technique with Sienese grace. The painting is in the Fondazione Musei Senesi. Madonna and Child panels were central to Renaissance workshop production, meeting constant demand from private patrons, confraternities, and churches who required intimate devotional images for personal piety and public display.
Technical Analysis
The devotional composition displays Sodoma's characteristic soft sfumato modeling and sweet expressions derived from his study of Leonardo da Vinci.
