Le Rocher
Historical Context
Le Rocher (The Rock) at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon is a landscape study reflecting Fragonard's sustained interest in natural formations and rocky terrain. Such landscape subjects drew on his Italian studies and the tradition of dramatic landscape painting. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The massive rock formation dominates the composition, rendered with attention to geological texture and the play of light across its surface. The warm palette and atmospheric handling characterize Fragonard's landscape style.
