Portrait of Vincenzo Anastagi
El Greco·1575
Historical Context
El Greco's Portrait of Vincenzo Anastagi (c. 1575) in the Frick Collection depicts a Knight of Malta in full armor, painted during the artist's Roman period. Anastagi served in the famous defense of Malta against the Ottoman siege of 1565, and his portrait evokes the martial heroism of that legendary event. The figure's commanding three-quarter pose and the painterly freedom of the armor's rendering show El Greco at his most Venetian, still close to Titian's influence before his move to Spain transformed his style. The Frick portrait is one of the finest surviving records of El Greco's Italian achievement in secular portraiture.
Technical Analysis
The commanding full-length format and the precise rendering of the military armor demonstrate El Greco's early mastery of the state portrait, with the dramatic lighting creating an image of martial authority.
