L'Adoration des bergers
Historical Context
L'Adoration des Bergers at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille is a late Nativity scene dating from around 1800, near the end of Fragonard's life. Religious subjects were rare in Fragonard's oeuvre, and this late work may reflect a turn toward more traditional themes in his final years. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The warm, intimate lighting focuses on the Holy Family group, with the shepherds emerging from surrounding darkness in a Rembrandtesque chiaroscuro. The late handling is softer and more contemplative than Fragonard's energetic earlier style.
