Bartolini Salimbeni Annunciation
Lorenzo Monaco·1420
Historical Context
Lorenzo Monaco's Bartolini Salimbeni Annunciation, painted around 1420 for the Basilica of the Holy Trinity in Florence, is a pivotal work marking the high point of the International Gothic in the city. The frescoes in the Bartolini Salimbeni chapel were among Lorenzo Monaco's last major commissions before his death around 1424. Lorenzo Monaco — Piero di Giovanni — was a Camaldolese monk who became one of Florence's most gifted painters in the transition between the Gothic and the Early Renaissance.
Technical Analysis
The Annunciation is rendered with Lorenzo Monaco's most refined linearity, with the angel Gabriel and the Virgin connected by flowing draperies that create a continuous rhythmic movement across the composition.
