Asnières, Bank of the Seine
Paul Signac·1885
Historical Context
Asnières, Bank of the Seine (1885) was painted in the same location where both Seurat and Signac were active in the mid-1880s — the Seine banks around Asnières and Clichy, northwest of Paris. By 1885 Signac was working closely with Seurat and adopting systematic divisionist technique. This riverbank study is among his most important early works demonstrating the transition from Impressionism to Neo-Impressionism. Museum of Modern Art, Saitama.
Technical Analysis
The riverbank is rendered in early divisionist dot-work, the technique becoming systematic under Seurat's direct influence. Warm land tones and cool water-sky zones are separated in the manner developed by Seurat and now adopted fully by Signac. The handling is more confident than his earliest plein-air studies.
