Fête Galante by Nicolas Lancret

Fête Galante

Nicolas Lancret·1730

Historical Context

Elegant figures gather in a parkland setting in this 1730 fete galante now at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. By this date Lancret had fully matured as an artist, producing polished variations on the outdoor entertainment scenes that constituted his specialty. The Gulbenkian collection, assembled by the Armenian oil magnate in the early twentieth century, brought together some of the finest examples of French eighteenth-century painting, and this Lancret exemplifies the refined taste that defined the collection.

Technical Analysis

The composition arranges groups of figures in a semicircular clearing surrounded by tall trees, creating the characteristic stage-like space of the fete galante. Lancret"s palette at this mature stage favors soft pinks, pale greens, and golden yellows, applied with fluid, confident brushwork. The figures display the elongated proportions and graceful postures he had perfected by 1730, while the landscape handling shows greater freedom and atmospheric sensitivity than his earlier work.
