The Deposition
Maestro Bartolomé·1488
Historical Context
Maestro Bartolomé depicted the Deposition from the Cross around 1488, showing Christ's body being lowered from the cross by his followers. This emotionally charged scene was central to late medieval Passion devotion. Bartolomé's rendering for the Ciudad Rodrigo altarpiece follows the narrative sequence through Christ's suffering and death. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting. The tension between Gothic grace and Renaissance structure gives art of this period a distinctive energy.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful composition of the multi-figure scene. The technical handling of the dead Christ's body and the mourners reflects Hispano-Flemish workshop conventions.
