The Last Judgment
Fernando Gallego·1488
Historical Context
Fernando Gallego's Last Judgment was among the most dramatic compositions he produced for Castilian churches. The subject, depicting Christ's final judgment of humanity, was one of the most theologically important and visually complex subjects in Christian art. Gallego's angular, intense style was particularly suited to the terror and majesty of this eschatological theme. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the dramatic composition required for the Last Judgment subject. Gallego's sharp figure drawing and intense coloring create a powerful vision of divine justice.
