St. Bartholomew and St. John the Evangelist
Fernando Gallego·1488
Historical Context
Fernando Gallego painted these paired apostle figures of Saints Bartholomew and John the Evangelist around 1488 for a Castilian altarpiece. Gallego's apostle figures are among the most individually characterized in Spanish painting, each displaying a distinct personality. His angular, intense style gives even standard devotional figures a remarkable psychological presence. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Gallego's bold, angular drawing and limited but powerful palette. The two apostles are strongly individualized with distinct poses and expressions.
