In the Time of Harmony (small)
Paul Signac·1907
Historical Context
In the Time of Harmony (small, 1907) is a reduced version of Signac's great 1893–95 utopian mural In the Time of Harmony, his masterwork of anarchist political imagery. The original, monumental canvas depicted a vision of free, harmonious society living close to the Mediterranean landscape — workers, intellectuals, and children in an idyllic coastal setting. Signac was a committed anarchist who believed art could contribute to political liberation, and this theme represented his most explicit integration of aesthetic and political ideals.
Technical Analysis
The small panel compresses the utopian landscape into a concentrated divisionist composition. Warm Mediterranean light saturates the scene in ochres and blues, the figures rendered as simplified, sun-drenched forms. The reduced scale required finely consistent dotwork to maintain legibility of the complex multi-figure composition.
