The Descent of the Holy Spirit; Saints Agnes and Dorothy (on verso)
Historical Context
Bartholomäus Zeitblom painted this panel of the Descent of the Holy Spirit with Saints Agnes and Dorothy on the verso around 1490. Pentecost, showing the Holy Spirit descending on the apostles as tongues of fire, celebrated the founding moment of the Christian Church. Zeitblom's double-sided panel served an altarpiece wing format. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty. The period's defining aesthetic — balanced composition, idealized figures, unified atmospheric space — was developed above all in Florence and Rome before spreading across Italy and Europe.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel painted on both sides for an altarpiece wing. Zeitblom's characteristic clear coloring and careful figure arrangement serve both the Pentecost scene and the saints on the reverse.
