The Lamentation over the Dead Christ
Perugino·1495
Historical Context
Pietro Perugino painted this Lamentation over the Dead Christ around 1495, a subject he treated on numerous occasions throughout his career. The mourning scene, with the dead Christ surrounded by grieving followers, was one of the most emotionally charged subjects in Christian art. Perugino's characteristic serenity tempers the grief, creating a contemplative rather than anguished devotional mood. Pietro Perugino was the most successful painter in Central Italy around 1490-1505, running workshops in both Perugia and Florence while executing major commissions in Rome, including the Sistine Chapel frescoes.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Perugino's characteristic soft modeling and luminous Umbrian landscape background. The graceful, idealized mourning figures express restrained sorrow within his signature compositional balance.
