Pietà with Saint Mary Magdalene
Bronzino·1529
Historical Context
This early Pieta with Magdalene, painted around 1529, shows the twenty-six-year-old Bronzino still working closely in the orbit of his teacher Pontormo. The emotional intensity and complex, compressed figure arrangement owe much to Pontormo's Deposition in Santa Felicita, which Bronzino had assisted in painting just months earlier. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays enamel-smooth surfaces, cool alabaster flesh, psychological distance, and an aristocratic hauteur that made his sitters appear untouchable ideals rather than mortal individuals.
Technical Analysis
The elongated proportions and acid color harmonies reflect Pontormo's direct influence, though the smoother surface finish and more controlled contours already hint at Bronzino's mature manner of crystalline precision.
