Gallant feast representing a lady dancing with Pulcinella by Nicolas Lancret

Gallant feast representing a lady dancing with Pulcinella

Nicolas Lancret·1725

Historical Context

Elegant revelers celebrate at a feast featuring a lady dancing with Pulcinella, the commedia dell'arte character, in this 1725 painting at the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse. The intersection of aristocratic festivity with theatrical character — Pulcinella's humpbacked, hook-nosed figure among the refined company — creates the characteristic Rococo mixture of reality and performance that Watteau had established. The Fondation Bemberg, housed in the Hôtel d'Assézat in Toulouse, is one of France's important private art foundations, with particular strength in works from the Italian and French schools that its creator Giorgi Bemberg assembled over decades of purposeful collecting. Lancret's work in this collection represents the Rococo tradition that formed one pillar of Bemberg's collection.

Technical Analysis

The contrast between the elegant lady and the comic Pulcinella figure creates a visual dialogue between refinement and buffoonery. Lancret arranges the surrounding spectators to frame this central pairing. The outdoor setting is rendered with characteristic freshness, while the figures receive the decorative attention typical of his fête galante compositions.
