Madonna at the Fountain
Jan van Eyck·1439
Historical Context
Jan van Eyck's Madonna at the Fountain, dated 1439 and now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, is a small devotional panel showing the Virgin holding the Christ Child before a fountain in an enclosed garden (hortus conclusus). The fountain and garden are traditional Marian symbols of purity. Painted just two years before Van Eyck's death, the work demonstrates his undiminished mastery and the intimate devotional character of his late small-scale paintings.
Technical Analysis
Despite its tiny format, Van Eyck achieves monumental grandeur through the rich blue mantle rendered in costly ultramarine, the intricate brocade cloth of honor, and the precisely detailed roses and fountain.
