View on the Banks of a River by Moonlight (mezzotint)
Aelbert Cuyp·1645
Historical Context
View on the Banks of a River by Moonlight from 1645 by Cuyp is a nocturnal scene that demonstrates his range beyond the sunlit pastoral views for which he is best known. Moonlit river scenes required a different approach to light and atmosphere. Cuyp worked primarily in Dordrecht throughout his career, and his paintings of the Dutch countryside—cattle in golden light, river views, and horsemen against luminous skies—established him as one of the most technically accomplished landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
Technical Analysis
The moonlight creates a cool, silvery atmosphere quite different from Cuyp's usual golden warmth, the river reflecting the lunar illumination with subtle tonal modulations.
