Forest study

The Perm Art Museum holds multiple works by Shishkin, including this forest study — a testament to how widely his work was distributed across Russian provincial collections during his lifetime and in the following decades. Forest studies from his later career show a painter who had thoroughly mastered his subject: the technical challenges that taxed him in early works had been solved long ago, and he could concentrate on subtler questions of atmosphere, time of day, and seasonal light. This example from around 1900 is likely a direct outdoor observation translated with minimal subsequent revision.

Shishkin's late studies show a slightly more fluid brushwork than his early meticulous style, though botanical precision remains paramount. The study's relatively modest scale allows concentrated observation of a single forest motif without the compositional ambition of his large exhibition canvases.
