Virgin of Mercy with Two Mercedarians
Historical Context
Zurbarán's Virgin of Mercy with Two Mercedarians depicts Our Lady of Mercy sheltering two members of the Mercedarian order under her protective mantle — a composition known as the Madonna della Misericordia, popular with religious orders since the medieval period. The Mercedarians were devoted to ransoming Christian captives from Muslim corsairs, and their patroness the Virgin of Mercy had special relevance to their mission. Zurbarán was one of several Spanish Baroque painters who worked extensively for this order.
Technical Analysis
The imposing Virgin stands frontally, her vast mantle spread to shelter the two kneeling religious figures below. Zurbarán's treatment of the enormous blue mantle — one of the most challenging compositional elements — is resolved with monumental authority and precise drapery modeling.
