Saint Anthony Abbot
Historical Context
Saint Anthony Abbot — the Desert Father who founded Christian monasticism in Egypt in the 3rd century — was a frequent subject of Spanish devotional painting, particularly for monastic communities that looked to him as a spiritual founder. Zurbarán's 1636 treatment presents the elderly hermit with his traditional attributes: a T-shaped staff, bells, and often a pig. The pig, associated with Anthony, became a symbol of his victory over temptation and his patronage of swineherds.
Technical Analysis
Anthony is shown as an elderly figure in a coarse brown habit, his attributes present. Zurbarán's strong chiaroscuro models the aged face with unsparing detail, and the rough fabric of the monastic habit is rendered with the same attention to surface as his more luxurious costume paintings.
