Saint Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble
Historical Context
Saint Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble, who died in 1132, was another major figure of the early Carthusian movement — he had provided the land on which Bruno founded the Grande Chartreuse. This 1638 work from the Jerez Charterhouse series depicts him in the role of ecclesiastical patron and protector of the Carthusian ideal. Hugh was canonized in 1134, barely two years after his death, testifying to the immediate veneration he inspired.
Technical Analysis
Hugh appears in Carthusian habit with bishop's attributes, depicted with the solemn presence Zurbarán brings to all figures in this series. The white of the habit and the vertical format create a unified, stele-like composition that functions both as devotional image and decorative element within the charterhouse interior.
