The Adoration of the Shepherds
Matthias Stom·1650
Historical Context
Shepherds adore the Christ Child by candlelight in this nocturnal Nativity by Matthias Stom, painted around 1650 and now at the Nantes Museum of Arts. Stom (also known as Stomer), a Dutch painter active primarily in Sicily, was among the most accomplished followers of Caravaggio"s dramatic chiaroscuro style. Born in Amersfoort around 1600, Stom traveled to Rome where he absorbed Caravaggist techniques before settling in Sicily, where he produced altarpieces and devotional paintings for local patrons.
Technical Analysis
Candlelight illuminates the scene from below and center, casting dramatic shadows upward across the faces of the adoring shepherds—a lighting scheme derived from the Utrecht Caravaggists but pushed to greater dramatic intensity. Stom"s palette is dominated by warm golden tones in the illuminated areas, with deep blacks and browns in the surrounding shadows. The flesh painting shows careful observation of how candlelight transforms skin tones, creating warm yellows and oranges where light strikes and cool, transparent shadows in the recesses.
