The Souvenir
Historical Context
The Souvenir in the Wallace Collection depicts a young woman carving initials into a tree, a timeless symbol of romantic devotion. Painted in 1777, this intimate work combines Fragonard's mastery of landscape with his sensitivity to themes of love and memory in the Rococo tradition. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The woman is set within a lush garden landscape, with the tree trunk providing both a narrative element and a strong vertical compositional anchor. The warm golden light and soft brushwork create a dreamlike, romantic atmosphere.
