Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist
Matthias Stom·1650
Historical Context
This late work by Stom, painted around 1650 during his final years in Sicily, returns to the Salome theme he had treated two decades earlier. The subject remained popular with Sicilian collectors who valued dramatic biblical narratives rendered in the Caravaggist mode. By this date Stom had softened his earlier harsh contrasts, producing a more nuanced interplay of light and shadow that reflects the general evolution of Caravaggism in southern Italy.
Technical Analysis
Warmer, more diffused lighting than Stom's earlier work softens the dramatic contrasts while maintaining the nocturnal atmosphere essential to the subject. Broader brushwork and richer color harmonies characterize this mature phase of his Sicilian production.
