The Archangel Leaves Tobias and his Family by Rembrandt

The Archangel Leaves Tobias and his Family

Rembrandt·1637

Historical Context

Rembrandt painted The Archangel Leaves Tobias and his Family around 1637, depicting the dramatic revelation from the Book of Tobit in which the angel Raphael, who has accompanied Tobias disguised as a mortal, reveals his divine identity before ascending to heaven. The moment of supernatural disclosure — the winged figure rising above the astonished family below — gave Rembrandt one of his most dramatic compositional challenges: reconciling the earthly naturalism of his figure style with the conventional visual language of the divine apparition. His solution was characteristic: the angel is rendered with physical conviction despite his supernatural flight, while the family's amazement is expressed through the specific gestures and expressions of real people confronted with the impossible.

Technical Analysis

The ascending angel creates a dramatic diagonal across the canvas, with brilliant white wings spreading against the dark sky while the amazed family below reacts with gestures of wonder and worship.

Look Closer

  • ◆Notice the ascending angel creating a dramatic diagonal across the canvas — the figure physically defying gravity in a way that gives the supernatural real weight.
  • ◆Look at the brilliant white wings spreading against the dark sky, the celestial made visible in a way that still obeys Rembrandt's naturalistic instincts.
  • ◆Observe the family below: their amazement expressed through specific gestures of wonder and worship rather than theatrical convention.
  • ◆Find Tobias the dog at the lower edge — the faithful pet mentioned in the Book of Tobit, present even at the supernatural farewell.
