St Luke painting the Virgin
El Greco·1560
Historical Context
El Greco's Saint Luke Painting the Virgin of around 1560, one of his earliest surviving works from his Byzantine formation in Crete, depicts the legendary scene of the Evangelist painting the Virgin's portrait — the founding myth of Christian sacred image-making. As a painter himself working within the icon tradition, El Greco had personal investment in the legend of Luke as the first Christian painter, and this early work stakes his own artistic practice within the tradition of sacred image-making extending back to the Gospel writer. The Byzantine style reflects his Cretan training before his Italian exposure.
Technical Analysis
The early work shows El Greco's training in the Cretan icon painting tradition, with Byzantine-influenced gold backgrounds and formalized figures before his transformative encounter with Venetian painting.
