Madame Victor Olry Roederer
Historical Context
Madame Victor Olry Roederer from 1900 is a commissioned portrait of a woman connected to the prominent Reims champagne family. Bouguereau accepted portrait commissions throughout his career, and these formal society portraits show a different side of his practice from the allegorical and religious subjects for which he is best known. The Roederer family were important patrons, their wealth built on one of the great champagne houses of Champagne. This portrait documents their social position at the century's turn, the kind of commission that occupied most of Bouguereau's energy alongside his more publicly celebrated allegorical compositions.
Technical Analysis
Society portraits demanded from Bouguereau the same technical mastery he brought to his allegorical work, but applied to the specific requirements of likeness and social representation. Dress, jewellery, and setting would all have been carefully attended to, while the face received his most concentrated sustained observation.
