Portrait en buste d'un jeune garçon
Historical Context
This very early bust portrait of a young boy at the Musee Cognacq-Jay dates from around 1745, making it one of the earliest known works by Fragonard, painted when he was barely a teenager. The formal portrait style reflects his initial training before he developed his distinctive manner. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The careful, somewhat tentative handling reveals the very young artist still learning his craft. The smooth, academic technique contrasts markedly with the virtuoso brushwork of his maturity.
