Saint John the Evangelist
Marx Reichlich·1502
Historical Context
Marx Reichlich painted this Saint John the Evangelist around 1502 in the Tyrol. The beloved disciple's youthful features and contemplative demeanor made him one of the most frequently depicted apostles. Reichlich's treatment reflects the devotional traditions of the Alpine region. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Reichlich's Tyrolean palette and careful rendering of the young apostle's features. The devotional format emphasizes the contemplative quality associated with the Evangelist.
