Annunciation to the Shepherds
Historical Context
Benvenuto Tisi da Garofalo painted this Annunciation to the Shepherds around 1515, a nocturnal scene depicting the angelic announcement of Christ's birth. As Ferrara's leading painter after his return from Rome, Garofalo brought Raphael's harmonious compositions and warm palette to subjects that had particular resonance in the Este court's devotional culture. The nocturnal treatment, with supernatural light emanating from the angels and illuminating the shepherds, draws on a Netherlandish tradition that had been absorbed into Italian painting via northern prints and traveling altarpieces. Garofalo's version combines this atmospheric tradition with distinctly Raphaelesque figure types.
Technical Analysis
The nocturnal scene demonstrates Garofalo's skill with dramatic lighting effects, using the contrast of angelic radiance against darkness to create atmospheric depth characteristic of his Raphaelesque Ferrarese style.
