Pieta by Sebastiano del Piombo

Pieta

Sebastiano del Piombo·1539

Historical Context

This 1539 Pietà was painted during Sebastiano's later years, after he received the office of the Piombo in 1531. His late Pietà compositions, with their dark, monumental gravity, reflect both Michelangelo's design influence and the somber mood of post-Sack Rome. The dark, monumental gravity of Sebastiano's late Pietà compositions reflects his lifelong dialogue with Michelangelo, whose drawings and aesthetic ideas shaped Sebastiano's Roman career more than any other single influence.

Technical Analysis

The painting employs a dark tonal palette with powerfully modeled figures, demonstrating the brooding grandeur that characterized Sebastiano's mature treatment of the Passion.
