The fortress — perhaps a reference to the fortified towns of the IJssel or Gelderse region — signals that the frozen landscape was also a strategic space during the Eighty Years' War, when rivers served as defensive moats and the freezing of waterways could determine military outcomes. Leisure and danger coexist in the same frozen expanse. Technical Analysis
